Practical: Using Special Effects Make-up

Costume: Special FX Make-Up

In our film opening we are hoping to use lots of make-up techniques to create a cinematic effect. We are using bruising make-up on the young girl character, and scratches and cuts on the character becoming possessed. I experimented with scar wax.

Scar Wax:

I decided to use scar wax for making the scratches and scars on the body of the character becoming possessed, this is because it can create a good effect for making deep cuts.
  1. I placed a thick layer of wax on the desired surface and left it to dry.
  2. When it had dried I placed a thin layer of tissue on top with watered down PVA glue, and waited for that to set.
  3. I made a small incision with nail scissors to create the cut.
  4. I filled the cut with dark red lipstick, and used other bruise coloured eye shadows to fill the cut. Once I had reached the desired colour I placed red lip gloss around the lip to create the effect of blood.

I decided that the paper looked too obvious so I covered it in foundation.

Evaluation:

What went well:
  • The effect looks good and could be incorporated into our film opening
  • It is easy to do
Even better if:
  • The paper doesn't look good - I will look at other ways to create a coating on the wax by looking at tutorials on YouTube.
  • The wax and paper take a while to set and dry therefore meaning the process takes a long time.
