Locations
Location for a horror film is vitual as it sets the scene and tone for the entirety of the film, so without a successful setting the film will lack professionalism and a good 'scare factor'.
Examples of effective locations
The house is isolated in the woods which has distanced them from any quick help. Due to this, it subtly sinks in the audiences minds how vulnerable the family are due to this isolated location.
Moreover, the location has dead, over grown trees, bushes, bramble etc. to really emphasise how the hose and location are a warning of unpleasant sights and occurrences. Also, the fact the house seems to be an anomaly in regards to the overgrown location is parallel to how the people are unwanted beings in the house, causing the supernatural occurrences.
As we can see from this, location plays a big part in setting the tone for the film as it portrays the uneasy and unpleasant seens and emotions shown in the film making the film all the more dramatic.
Now in The Blair Witch Project it is entirely set in the woods. Therefore, the uncertainty of nature and humans being unable to control it adds to the unsettling and elusive supernatural entity in the film which we find really appealing.
Additionally, the woods are a confusing and isolated place, putting the characters out of contact with civilisation adding to the sense of helplessness and unease the film is portraying.
Moreover, the woods support the connotations of the supernatural presence being a witch and the story of the witch taking children. Due to this it creates a sense of truth to the story and validity to scare and engage the audience.
Similarly to the other two films locations, we see the woods taking a strong role is setting the motion for the film while adding to the sense of uncertainty.
Unlike The Conjuring, the house in The Woman in Black is covered in overgrown weeds and bushes which portrays to the audience the house has become apart of the unpleasantness that the brambles represent.
Moreover, the fact that house is uncared for and overgrown shows there must be systematic problem with it for no one to want to inhabit, apart from the paranormal spirit. Therefore, we can conclude that the woods and overgrown brambles that surround the houses are a common convention for bad events to happen there which will create dramatic irony within the audience as its a well used convention in the industry.
Evaluation
Having evaluated the different locations including woods and houses i believe for practically, a film opening with no house will be a lot easier in terms of linguistics. However, i do believe the woods does set a very unique uneasy feeling in the audience due to the unpredictable and scary connotations thats the media has instilled into the audiences throughout the years. Therefore, i feel for our product a woods location would be perfect for out opening.
