Possession Photoshop

Possession Photoshop: Eyes

I did some research in what effects can be found in the possession/ horror genre. I found a common recurrence that the colour of the eyes change when someone becomes possessed by a supernatural being, however the colour of the eyes are different. When editing in photoshop I will use the same image and change the colour of the eye to see the different effect the colour has on the audience and the image its self.

First of all I will edit an image so that the eyes are seen to be completely black, I intended to make this image using nothing but photoshop.
This is the original un-edited image that I will be using:

I began with the blacking out the eyes to create the possessed effect, however I also wanted to keep the area in which were highlighted to keep the eye realistic.
I started by inserting a duplicated layer and a black layer in which I will use to make the black eyes. I didn’t want to use the paint tool as I wouldn’t be able to edit and merge the images to make it look realistic.

I used the soft rubber brush tool to remove one of the layers that covered the eye, doing the revealed the black below it. I ensured that the hardness was as low as possible so that the edges where soft and made the image seem more realistic. However as there was no reflection of light in the eye it is very dull and easily noticeable as edited.

Next I merged the removed eyes layer and the black layer to create on layer, this makes it easier for me to manage as there are less layers to get in the way. Once I had completed that I removed majority of the original layer, I only left the highlighted areas in the eyes as I will over lay the image on to the merged image.
Once I had placed the layer with the highlights over the other image you were able to see that the eye began to look more realistic. However the highlights in the eyes were very sharp and harsh therefore I wanted to smooth the edges of the highlights and make them stand out less.

I changed the opacity of the original layer that had the highlights on, by doing this it made the eye look as if it was reflecting what it could see and also created a “glossy” effect.

Finally I changed the brightness and contrast and also changed the photo to black and white as I thought that the image may be more effective.

This is the final image:
